ON rare occasions, when you meet people for the first time, there occurs
a certain kind of chemistry that is neither deniable nor reversible. You know instantly that
they can make your heart sing joyously even with their silent presence, because the need
to be—and grow—with them becomes so great that elation takes over rational explanation.
This
is that rare chemistry that bonded Ailsa and I not long after we arrived in Haifa,
Israel four weeks of each other. The ensuing friendship remains cherished for
its effervescence and truthfulness. It is one of the best I ever had.
Besides,
how many professional archivists in the world sing as beautifully as she does?
